History and Archaeology
Cagliari is rich in history and archeology, but the surrounding area boasts even more
treasures and monuments which reveal the history of Sardinia, the Nuraghic civilisation
along with the Phoenician, Punic and Roman times.
One place not to be missed is ancient Nuraghic settlement of Barumini, recognized on the
World Heritage list. It is much more than a nuraghi as we would normally imagine: it is an
enormous prehistoric complex and incredibly well preserved.
As is the Punic, and later Roman city of Nora, with it’s fascinating ruins and Punic
acropolis of Monte Sirai, which lies on a plane which dominates the south-western coast.
